It's a book intended to be a brave, original retelling of the serum run through the eyes of Balto. It's a fictional rendition of the real event, the Serum Run of 1925. Teams of sled dogs relayed medicine to cure the town of Nome of diphtheria, fatal if not treated. The town was out of medicine when the disease struck, and it was the middle of winter. The dogs ran 674 miles in 5 and a half days, one single team (led by Togo the husky) travelling over 200 miles, through mountains and over frozen ocean (which cracked open while they were on it but he still kept going). Balto was the one who actually delivered the medicine to Nome, on the last relay. 10,000 people were saved that day.

Next year is the 100th anniversary!
